The system installed at the USX pipe mill in Birmingham Alabama provides an In-Storage Process and Retrieval capability that supports the pipe mill’s finishing line.

It is the predecessor to the IACT. The lessons learned and the automation principles validated there are the foundation for today’s IACT.

This is a container yard under cover. It is 1,450’ x 283’ and utilizes 1,275 forty foot containers. Each container holds up to 25 tons of pipe.

This facility produces more than 600,000 tons of pipe per annum and employs 2 wide span mono box RMGs with cantilevers. It has run continuously since December 1984 without a forced outage and without damaging a spreader or container.
